As the guy above said, unassign drive and reverse and map gear up and gear down. It works for me now. You can also assign a button to switch between auto and sequential, it works great. I prefer having a physical lever for DNR, I also do as below and use sequential for steep hills as the comp shifting is so bad.

As others have said, the car mods aren't all that great. Probably the best one is the Skoda, but even then, it's been through so many hands that finding a good one could be difficult. I am a "virtual UK resident" with living real life in Germany and my ETS2 base being in the UK. And I can tell you, I have no issues whatsoever driving on the left, and also not changing to the Continent and driving on the right.
Any car mod that you use will handle and drive like a truck - that is gear changing, engine power band and suspension mechanics which are all truck based. Yes you can drive cars - they are all mod vehicles, but they don't behave like cars when you drive them. I hope that this gives you a fuller answer and understanding to your question.
